"Soundscape No. 2" by John Yao is an experimental jazz work that explores sonic texture and instrumental color. Part of a series of concise compositions, this piece reimagines the traditional roles within a jazz ensemble—most notably, the rhythm section steps away from timekeeping duties to instead provide layers of color, texture, and density beneath sustained wind passages. The work builds to a dramatic climax, led by a free-form tenor saxophone solo.
