Ode to the Last Twinkie blends rigorous compositional design with a playful rhythmic spirit. Built on a simple I–IV–V bass progression, the piece employs set theory to generate its melodies and harmonies, creating rich, non-functional chordal colors above a reggae-inspired, straight-eighth groove. Throughout the piece, minimalist textures are layered in, building tension and motion, while collective improvisation drives the ensemble’s energy. Solo backgrounds are conducted freely out of time over a sustained vamp, blurring the line between in and out time elements.

Non-traditional notation techniques are used in a variety of ways to guide improvisers to operate within parameters while allowing freedom of interpretation and interaction. The chart hits hard and grooves, culminating in a rousing collective ensemble exchange with the drums—a jubilant finish to this witty and rhythmically charged piece.

Trumpet High note - D#6
