Owing to his versatility as Trombonist, Composer and Arranger, John Yao has enjoyed a steady rise on the New York City jazz scene since arriving from his native Chicago in 2005. Born in 1977 outside of Chicago, John began studying piano at the age of 7. As is often the case, John disliked his piano teacher and wanted to quit. So at the age of 11, after the trombone caught his attention, he made a deal with his parents to quit the piano and to play the trombone instead.

Hungry for more knowledge, John continued his study and has since received a Bachelor's degree from Indiana University and a Master's degree in Jazz Performance from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. During his time at Indiana University, John resumed playing the piano, which would become an important tool in the development of his composing and arranging skills. While at Queen's College, Luis Bonilla profoundly influenced John not only through their study of the trombone but as educator and a person. In his studies with Michael Mossman, John grew immensely as composer and arranger and received the Aaron Copland School of Music Jazz Award.

As a performer, John is a frequent performer with Grammy-award winning ensembles such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. He has also performed with Paquito D'Rivera, Eddie Palmieri, Danilo Perez, Kurt Elling, Chris Potter, Teo Macero, Buddy DeFranco, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Lou Rawls, Brooklyn Big Band, Jeff Fairbanks Orchestra, Josh Shneider Orchestra and Bright Eyes. He has played at many major venues including Carnegie Hall, the Village Vanguard, Birdland and the Kennedy Center. Internationally, he has played in Japan, Hong Kong, Italy, Austria, Peru, Brazil, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

As a composer and arranger, John has been commissioned to write works for professional ensembles such as the Grammy Award winning Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, Band of Bones, and the HGM Big Band based in Croatia as well as writing for his big band, John Yao & His 17-piece Instrument. His works have been performed by college and high school ensembles including Temple University, Indiana University, University of Illinois at Chicago, HGM Orkestar in Zagreb, Croatia, New Trier High School and Townsend Harris High School to name a few. He was a member of the BMI Jazz Composers workshop in 2012-14 under the guidance of Jim McNeely and Mike Holober.

Yao is the leader of two working bands - John Yao Quintet and John Yao & His 17-piece Instrument. The Quintet released its début recording In the Now on Innova Recordings in 2012 with critical acclaim. In June 2015, the big band project, John Yao & His 17-piece Instrument, released Flip-Flop on See Tao Recordings which received positive reviews from Jazz Times, Jazziz and the New York City Jazz Record. Yao serves as artistic director, conductor and performer with both groups featuring all his original compositions. In the Fall of 2015, he founded the Big Band & Beyond Concert Series featuring the JY-17 and the premiere of new works for big band at each concert. The series goal is to further new works in the genre and to offer a broad view of the possibilities of jazz composition.

John has also established him as an in demand educator in New York and beyond. He teaches at Hunter College High School and is an active guest artist and soloist at schools around the United States. John is currently working on the release of his third album entitled Presence by the John Yao Quintet.

Clinic and Masterclass Topics:

Trombone Masterclass

(for all brass instruments)

A thorough understanding of fundamental brass techniques, such as breathing, posture, tone, technique and style is essential to playing a brass instrument. These concepts will be demonstrated along with an approach to practicing them for all levels of experience.

Improvisation Masterclass

(for all levels)

This clinic is an open discussion of improvisation and a demonstration of how to incorporate basic musical tools and vocabulary in the context of a solo. It's focus will be on scales and chords and methods of practicing improvisation.

Big Band/Combo Masterclass

The art of playing in an ensemble is one of the more challenging yet rewarding experiences in music. Concepts discussed will include style, various rehearsal techniques, selection of repertoire, application of musical skills and understanding each individual's role not only within their specific section, but also within the entire ensemble.

John Yao Quintet

The John Yao Quintet is based in New York City and has been together since 2010. The group performs Yao's unique original compositions which range from hard-hitting, aggressive and experimental jazz to ballads that exude passion, tenderness and understanding.

The quintet features Jon Irabagon on saxophones, Randy Ingram on piano, Peter Brendler on bass, and Shawn Baltazor on drums.

The John Yao Quintet has been actively performing around New York City and will be releasing its second album in the Spring of 2017.

John Yao & His 17-piece Instrument

Comprised of NYC's finest jazz musicians, John Yao & His 17-piece Instrument has been active on the scene since the Spring of 2013. Led by Trombonist, composer and conductor John Yao, the 17-piece ensemble features Yao's compositions, which explore form and structure while combining serial and 12-tone techniques with swing, latin and funk grooves. Yao seeks to stretch the limits of big band jazz all while staying connected to traditional big band style.

The band released "Flip-Flop" in 2015 with critical acclaim. See the Press tab above to read what the critics are saying.
Feelin' LuckyBig Band (5 Saxes, 8 Brass, 4 Rhythm)This bluesy groovin shuffle is a great workout for the entire band and features classic big band interplay between the brass and saxes. The 16-bar form serves as a great vehicle for the beginner/intermediate improvisor and features a bluesy, soulful melody. The brass soli between solos in the baritone sax and trumpet is followed by an exhilarating shout chorus. A great chart for working on swing rhythms, style and ensemble playing. 5 saxes (no doubles), 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 4 rhythm. Top note for Trumpet is a written Bb above the staff and Trombone is A4. Medium.

Gettin' the Good NewsBig Band (5 Saxes, 8 Brass, 4 Rhythm)Commissioned by Anthony Mazzochi for the Marine Park Junior High Jazz Ensemble in Brooklyn, NY, this is an excellent chart for beginning jazz ensembles. It features funky boogaloo feel with a simple melody and modern colorful harmonies over an extended blues form. Following the solos is a breakdown section beginning with rhythm section and baritone sax and building into a full band shout. 5 saxes (no doubles), 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 4 rhythm. Top note for Trumpet is G above staff and Trombone is G4. Easy, medium level.

Whatever's AroundBig Band (5 Saxes, 8 Brass, 4 Rhythm)Modern post-bop style composition based on the progression of I Got Rhythm. The bop styled melody is a great workout for the saxophone section and is followed by an open solo section. A unison soli section highlights the brass on weaving melodic lines and shapes over a colorful reharmonization of the A sections. 5 saxes (no doubles), 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 4 rhythm. Top note for Trumpet is one high D and Trombone is Ab4. Difficult.

Out of SocketBig Band (5 Saxes, 8 Brass, 3 Rhythm)Composed and arranged by John Yao for the Yaozeki Big Band, this medium swing chart features the band grooving and hitting hard. There's a lot of room for blowing with solos in the Alto Sax, Trombone and Trumpet. The simple melody presented in the beginning by the brass returns at the end of the chart, but this time in the saxes and over a 5/4 funky boogaloo groove. Following the statement of the melody, the 3 soloists return together before the band roars to its final climax.

There Will Never Be Another YouBig Band (5 Saxes, 8 Brass, 3 Rhythm)This hard swiging arrangment was written as a tribute to Jim Warrick of New Trier High School for his retirement concert. It is written in the style of the Basie band and features solos from the Piano, Trumpet, Tenor Sax, and Trombone. The chart climaxes on a roaring shout chorus that allows space for the drums. No doubles, Trumpet Range Eb6.
buy nowdownload sample
Up EasyBig Band (5 Saxes, 8 Brass, 3 Rhythm)Commissioned by Luis Bonilla of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, this chart is a medium swinging blues with a vamp arranged in a modern big band jazz style. The angular melody is first stated by the Trombone and Tenor Saxes. In the second statement, the melody is modified in several ways and spread throughout the entire ensemble. Solos from the Trombone and Tenor Sax, broken up by a shout chorus, are followed by a unison trombone soli that will give the trombones a workout.

That's How They Get YouBig Band (5 Saxes, 8 Brass, 3 Rhythm)Commissioned by Luis Bonilla of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, this contemporary latin jazz chart uses a Rumba/Guaguanco groove over an open E minor vamp along with changes from Coltrane's "Countdown". The extended introduction really gives the band a chance to shine before the melody enters. The solos in the Trombone and Tenor Sax are followed by a tutti section featuring the band in tight ensemble passages. A dense and colorful shout chorus sends the drums into an open solo. The restatement of the the theme brings the conclusion of the chart which is deceptive and humorous.

Where's SepiaBig Band (5 Saxes, 8 Brass, 3 Rhythm)Commissioned by Luis Bonilla of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, this modern latin arrangement uses two sections to convey two contrasting moods. The first section uses a dark, mysterious vamp with colorful brass textures to feature the piano. An abrupt transition sends the band into a hard latin groove where the Soprano Sax, Trumpet and Trombone trade solos. The chart concludes with the band roaring on a mambo section followed by a drum solo.

Tell Me a Bedtime StoryBig Band (5 Saxes, 8 Brass, 3 Rhythm)This medium straight 8th groove chart features the Flugelhorn on Herbie Hancock's classic tune. The melody stated by the Flugelhorn is supported by colorful textures in the brass and saxes. After the solos from the Flugelhorn and piano, this soft-spoken chart is energized by a double time vamp providing more solo space for the flugelhorn and eventually building to the climax of the chart. No doubles, Trumpet range Db6.

Madame TolouseBig Band (5 Saxes, 8 Brass, 3 Rhythm)Arranged for the Yaozeki Big band, this funky 2nd line chart features the Tenor Sax on Brecker's altered 12 bar blues for with a lot of solo space for the Tenor as well as solos from the Trombone and/or Baritone Sax. The ensemble is featured on a shout section followed by a mixed meter vamp that gives more solo room for the Tenor Sax. As the vamp coninues, the ensemble enters in layers eventually returning to the melody. No doubles, Trumpet range D6.
